WG&R Apprentice recieves IMechE Whitworth Scholarship Award
WG&R Apprentice wins Bronze Medal at WorldSkills Uk National Final.
After scoring high in the regional heats,WG&R Apprentice Tom Hinchliffe secured a place at the World Skills Uk national final comepetiton for Construction Metalwork, which took place in November at the NEC Arena in Birmingham. Tom was entered into the regional heats after showing both skill and knowledge to his training provider, Bradford College, who had previously awarded him with the Student of the Year Award.
During this National Final, each competitor had a total of 14 hours to employ thier metalworking skill to create a module to very high tolerances. The competitors were required to use a variety of skills to complete the task. Tom managed to come third in this National competiton, with a mark of 85/100 claiming a Bronze Medal. Tom also achieved 1st place in a similar regional advanced fabrication and welding competition; "Matchfit", earlier that year. Besides fabrication & welding, Tom also studies on a part time basis for a HNC, and is to progress into education further by studying at University in September 2015.

WG&R Apprentice Tom Hinchliffe has recently completed his HNC in Mechanical Engineering and will go onto study at the University of Sheffield in September. Out of the 8 units he completed during his HNC, Tom managed to achieve a total of 6 distinctions and 2 merits.
Tom applied for the scholarship by filling out an application form. Toms application was successful and he was put on a short list to attend an interview at the IMechE in London. The interview was held by 6 members of the Whitworth Soceity, as well as the President of the IMechE. Because of his excellent grades and sucess in competitions, as well as being a STEM ambassador and achieving Student of the Year at Bradford college, the interview was a success and Tom was selected to receive one of 10 scholarship awards, which provides funding of up to £5000 per year while Tom completes his degree.
Tom recently collected the first installment of his scholarship at the Vision Awards Ceremony at the IMechE in London.
